Anton Biryukov of Verdazo Analytics places third in global machine learning competition

Verdazo Analytics Data Scientist Anton Biryukov took home third prize in a machine learning competition in March of this year. “Turn up the Zinc” was a crowdsourcing challenge to augment Glencore‘s efforts to predict zinc recovery at their McArthur River mine in Australia. The participants used the Unearthed platform and consisted of 229 global innovators from 17 countries forming 61 teams and submitting 1286 model variations over one month. “The Unearthed platform provides a great opportunity to polish my data science skills, while solving applied problems in the oil and gas and mining industries,” said Anton, who worked on the problem during his spare time. While most contest submissions were team collaborations, Anton chose to tackle the problem with the help of just one junior data resource. “For my team, third prize in this competition means motivation to try harder in the next challenge, plus new doggy treats for Junior Data Analyst Lumi.” Lumi and Anton discuss strategy For more information on “Turn up the Zinc,” click here.

Bertrand Groulx presenting machine learning case study at SPE workshop

Verdazo Analytics President Bertrand Groulx will present a machine learning case study at the Society for Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Subsurface Data Analytics workshop on February 27, 2019 at The Bow in Calgary. The case study utilizes GLJ Petroleum Consultants’ Spirit River regional geologic study and incorporates both geoscience and engineering data to characterize which geological, reservoir and completion data contribute most significantly to well production performance. John Hirschmiller of GLJ will join Groulx for the presentation. As part of the presentation, Groulx will outline how machine learning models provide objective, analytical means to interpret large, complex datasets. The presentation will provide interested parties with practical applications of machine learning, particularly for assessing the commercial viability of resource development, optimizing completion designs and informing reserves evaluations. Groulx’s presentation takes place from 8:00-9:30 a.m on February 27th. The SPE workshop takes place February 26-27 at The Bow in Calgary. To register or for more information, click here.

Bertrand Groulx busking in the +15 for YYC Tech Gives

Above: Guitar-slinger Bertrand Groulx in his busking home in the +15, flanked by Don Chenery, Senior Business Analyst and Dean Anderson, Machine Learning Business Development. Verdazo Analytics President Bertrand Groulx has been playing a mix of Christmas songs, rock favourites and even an original as part of a multi-day busking engagement to raise funds for YYC Tech Gives. All funds raised are being donated to The Calgary Food Bank. Groulx – a longtime amateur guitar player and singer – has raised almost $2500 in his first two days busking over the lunch hour between Brookfield Place and Bow Valley Square. The gigs actually mark his first-ever public performances. His setlist has included: Good Riddance, English Girls, Another Lonely Day, Hey Jude, an original song called Just Right, along with a host of seasonal favourites like Blue Christmas, Silver Bells and Jingle Bell Rock. Bertrand will perform again Monday December 17 and Wednesday December 19. Machine Learning: Practical Use in Upstream Oil & Gas

There’s an enormous amount of discussion about the possibilities of Machine Learning but far less practical information about the impacts it can have on Oil & Gas today. In this presentation, we articulate some of most valuable prizes Machine Learning offers for upstream Oil & Gas, including feature importance and sensitivity analysis, and the power of predictive Machine Learning models. The presentation outlines two recent case studies – one focused on reservoir properties and the other focused on drilling and completion optimization – that bring the material to life. This presentation was originally delivered May 31, 2018 as part of the SPE Oil & Gas Breakfast Series in Calgary.
