How Verdazo enabled an O&G startup to thrive during tough economic times

Our Oil & Gas clients continue to emphasize an increasingly acute need to do things smarter, simpler and more cost-effectively across their organizations. That’s one of the reasons why VERDAZO has been effective for them: it enhances their analytical capability and capacity no matter their economic constraints. This is important for any producer where the order of financial magnitude of a decision can be in the multi-millions of dollars. However, it may be even more critical for junior companies who often walk a thin financial line on the way to full capitalization and initial production. When Calgary-based Burgess Creek Exploration was founded in 2015, VERDAZO was its very first purchase.

Verdazo’s contribution to the Alberta Modernized Royalty Framework

In early 2016 we were pleased to be asked by CAPP (Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers), and several of our clients, to contribute to the recent Alberta Oil & Gas royalty review mandated by the NDP government after its election in 2015. Our invitation to participate was based on the recognition that a critical way to ensure productive dialogue between stakeholders, particularly those with different needs and perspectives, is to start from an accurate, transparent, data-driven analysis framework. As part of our contribution to the review, we used our VERDAZO software to provide rapid analysis on a variety of potential C* scenarios and the impacts they would have on the industry and its stakeholders. It was particularly satisfying to be able to present our analyses to the panel stakeholders in an easily digestible visual form with our software. In our work with clients across the industry over the last decade, we’ve learned that being able to deliver sophisticated information visually is an effective way to build a data-driven consensus on the best course of action. Here at Verdazo Analytics, we’re very proud of the final outputs of the royalty review and thank CAPP (Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers) for including us in the process.

Visual Analytic Techniques for Operational Efficiency and Performance Improvements

(May 2016, Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS) Conference) Increasingly companies are striving to optimize production and minimize costs. Analytics is increasingly becoming the secret weapon that companies use to identify downtime reduction opportunities, reduce costs and establish a competitive advantage. This presentation outlines visual analytic techniques and approaches that have helped oil and gas producers optimize production and reduce costs in challenging times.

Understanding Type Curve Complexities and Analytic Techniques

(Dec 2015, SPE – Calgary Section) This presentation is the culmination of a decade of working with industry experts. It illustrates the complexities, technical considerations and analytic techniques that should be part of type-well curve development and use. If proper techniques are not used there can be significant impacts on reserves evaluations, development planning, production performance comparisons and completion optimization insights.

Statistical Techniques For Analyzing Production Impacts of Completion Designs

(May 2015, REU Calgary) This presentation explores statistical techniques to better understand completion impacts on production and reserve evaluations. It demonstrates changes in completions over time and the associated changes in production profiles. It focuses largely on the Montney resource play, the largest completion data set integrated with production data to date. Editor’s Note: While VISAGE rebranded to VERDAZO in April 2016, we’re proud of our work as VISAGE and haven’t changed the VISAGE name in our earlier presentations.

Completion Analysis Considerations & Techniques For Reserve Evaluations

(Feb 2015, SPEE Calgary) This presentation demonstrates the degree to which completions have changed over time and the associated changes in production profiles. It offers techniques for quantifying production impacts of completion designs and demonstrates statistical analysis techniques in action. Editor’s Note: While VISAGE rebranded to VERDAZO in April 2016, we’re proud of our work as VISAGE and haven’t changed the VISAGE name in our earlier presentations.

Diagnostic Analytics: Tools to Identify Opportunities

(May 2014, PASC Education Day) This presentation illustrates diagnostic techniques to help production engineers identify and prioritize optimization opportunities. Three key performance areas are covered: 1) ensuring downtime impact reduction in daily production, 2) ensuring net operating income is maximized and operating costs are minimized, and 3) ensuring performance deviations from forecast are addressed early to minimize impacts on cash flow and overall corporate reserves value. Editor’s Note: While VISAGE rebranded to VERDAZO in April 2016, we’re proud of our work as VISAGE and haven’t changed the VISAGE name in our earlier presentations.

Bertrand Groulx presenting on using visual analytics for operational efficiency at Banff CORS conference

Verdazo Analytics’ President Bertrand Groulx will deliver a presentation on Practitioners Day at the annual Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS) conference on May 31, 2016 in Banff, AB. The presentation is titled “Visual Analytic Techniques for Operational Efficiency & Performance Improvements.” This visually stimulating presentation is particularly timely given the collapse in commodity prices and the need to identify every optimization opportunity possible. Groulx will explain how data analytics are being used by companies to identify downtime reduction opportunities, reduce costs and establish competitive advantages. CORS is a scientific and professional society that takes a leadership role in the advancement of both the theory and the practice of Operational Research (OR) in Canada and safeguards the existence of a vital Canadian OR community by promoting contact between people interested in the subject. Groulx is a recent Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) nominee for the Regional Production and Operations Award. Groulx was nominated for his contributions to advancing industry best practices, elevating industry understanding of complexities in type-well curve development and improving analytic capabilities and statistical methodologies. Groulx’s CORS presentation begins at 10:45 a.m. (May 31, 2016 in Banff) Click here to view the presentation.
